Jewelry is made of sterling silver, 14k gold-filled (14k gold bonded over base metal), vermeil plate (24k gold over silver), or 14k gold. Any exceptions will be noted. I highly recommend storage of your jewelry in the ziplock bag they are sent with to prevent tarnishing. You may also include an anti-tarnish strip in the bag.
To clean your items, use a soft silver polishing cloth to gently bring back shine -- do not clean pearls or gemstones in liquid or expose to chemicals.
The Materials I Use Sterling silver: Sterling is a term that refers to an alloy of silver that contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper.
Bali silver: Many of the charms and components I use are handmade by artisans from Bali. The Balinese have a long tradition of craftmanship and artistry in metals. The Bali silver I use is sterling or even higher silver content.
Vermeil : Most of the items marked "vermeil" on the website refers to the fact that the item is a gold plate over sterling silver. The company I use creates "vermeil style" gold plate that is 40 micro inches of 98.5% pure gold plated over sterling silver with a fine layer of nickel in between. This is durable and keeps the items more affordable. FTC specifies that items 100 microns thick may be called "vermeil".
14k gold-filled (from the Rings and Things website): is made by using heat and pressure to apply a layer of karat gold to a base of less costly metal. This produces a surface with karat gold. The minimum layer of karat gold must equal at least 1/20 of the total weight of the item.
For more information on various metals used in jewelry, please visit the Rings and Things website guide here.
